Information for Attorneys
At the time of the initial contact Dr. Davis will answer any initial questions you may have about his services and he will determine whether or not the matter you are calling about falls within his areas of expertise. If it appears that the matter is something that Dr. Davis can assist you with he will ask you to provide a brief description of the legal matter, the formal citation for the case (if any), the psycho-legal issues and questions involved (e.g., fitness to proceed, criminal responsibility, sentencing mitigation, need for commitment, parental capacity, psychological damages, etc.), the role(s) you envision Dr. Davis may be asked to fulfill in the case (e.g., forensic examiner, expert witness, rebuttal witness, consultant, etc.), your theory of the case (if any) and the theory of the case advanced by the opposing side.
During the initial contact Dr. Davis will also ask you to provide information about billing and payment for his services and he will answer any questions you may have about his fees and billing policies. In criminal and child protective matters referred by public defender's offices, courts, prosecutor's offices, and child protective services agencies, Dr. Davis will require some form of assurance of payment prior to initiating work on a case. In civil matters as well as criminal matters in which the State will not be paying for Dr. Davis's services, Dr. Davis will generally require pre-payment of a retainer fee for at least a substantial portion of the envisioned services.
As a general rule, there will be no charge for initial consultation if Dr. Davis is not retained in the case.
If, based upon the initial consultation, it is decided that Dr. Davis will be retained in the case Dr. Davis will prepare and send you a letter documenting the initial contact, his understanding of the roles he is expected to fulfill, and his understanding of the arrangements for payment of his services.
